Construction Technology

Building or Construction Trades is a pre-professional program designed to prepare students for employment in a skilled construction trade, apprenticeship, or for a college program in construction trades.  The Southwest Dubois Building Trades Corporation and Patoka Valley work with local employers to provide opportunities. The program focuses on residential construction. Students have built homes, duplexes and small apartment complexes, and recently assisted with a Habitat for Humanity home. Each year students in this program study the proper construction methods needed to completely construct a residential home.

The curriculum includes safety, carpentry, excavation, concrete, masonry, plumbing, drywall installation, heating & air conditioning, electrical, roofing, painting, flooring, and finish carpentry.  Students perform skilled tasks associated with home building including reading blueprints, estimating costs, fabrication, and use of power tools. Emphasis is placed on craftsmanship, understanding all aspects of the industry, modern green technology products and professional practice. Team-work and problem solving are required as is work ethic and self-confidence. Students should be prepared to work in all kinds of weather.

What can be more rewarding than seeing framed walls take shape and finally to see a finished home? If you enjoy seeing the fruits of your labor and gain satisfaction by building construction that will last several life times, you will enjoy this career. Home construction and skilled trade employment represent a large portion of the U.S. workforce which will not be shipped overseas and will remain in high demand.
